The Clarkson City Commission approved a purchase to upgrade a city vehicle with winter weather response capabilities this week.
At the recommendation of city employee Brad Harrison, the city commission approved the $11,000 purchase of a salt spreader and snow plow, which will be equipped to one of the city's Chevrolets.
According to City Commissioner Tim Faulkner, Clarkson's current salt spreader is not adequate.
The parts are being purchased from Northern Tool.
Harrison also suggested purchasing another set of the aforementioned equipment for the city's second Chevrolet as a back-up, but no action was taken to do so.
In other business, the city commission:
*Approved a proclamation naming Dec. 15 Bill of Rights Day in the city of Clarkson in honor of the 234th anniversary of the establishment of the American Bill of Rights.
*Heard from Clarkson Mayor Bonnie Henderson, who said last Friday's Christmas in the Park ceremony was well attended, and Clarkson VFW Post 12175 distributed 300 gift-wrapped toys to children there.
*Discussed next steps for addressing properties found to still be in violation of the city's nuisance ordinance after letters were mailed to property owners. City Attorney Tom Goff recommended having the Clarkson Police Department open criminal cases, which would be prosecuted by Grayson County Attorney Jeremy Logsdon. The commission agreed to speak with Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith about this matter at its January meeting, as he was not in attendance Monday night.
*Received an update from Henderson regarding the repaving of the walking trail at the city park. While the work has not yet been done, Henderson said, Scotty's Contracting & Stone assured her the previously agreed upon price would be honored when the blacktopping is completed.
*Was informed by Clarkson Fire Chief Andy Cain that the fire department had purchased a new side-by-side.
*Was informed by Clarkson City Clerk/Treasurer Scotty Gore that local officials would be meeting with Suzanne Miles, a field representative for U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie, this week regarding the $1.5 million in federal funding the city is set to receive for sewer system upgrades.
